Retailers from the last 10 years, in descending order of annual sales, have the lowest prices per unit of goods in the nation: jons supermarkets,cherries valley supermarket ,supermarket sweeps 2020 ,jd grocery,supermarkets and bakery in Washington, DC.
And these are the big winners.
Supermarkets sell more products per square foot than any other sector of the economy, with the biggest advantage going to cherry Valley supermarkets, which have the largest profit margin per unit.
But while the average price per square-foot of the top 50 supermarket chains is $1.25, the average cost per square feet in the U.S. is $2.29, according to the retail consultancy research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech.
That’s not a typo: The top 50 retailers earn $3.35 for every square foot of their retail stores.
This isn’t to say that the average shopper isn’t willing to pay more for a product, nor that the consumer isn’t happy.
The retail industry in general is an interesting and profitable sector, and one where profits are driven by customer satisfaction.
But that’s not to say it’s perfect.
Last year, for instance, jons reported its first quarterly loss since 2009, while cherries Valley reported a double-digit profit drop.
The chain also lost nearly $600 million in the first quarter of 2020.
And if you consider jontas revenue of $1 billion for the first three months of 2020, its operating margin dropped to 2.6% from 3.6%.
Still, the bottom line is that the bottom 10 percent of U.P. shoppers still have the highest average prices per square unit, according to Kantar.
And that’s just a rough estimate.
So, where does that leave you?
If you’re a shopper who enjoys a good bargain, then you’ll probably end up with the cheapest food you can buy, but if you’re looking for a great deal, you’ll need to be prepared to spend more to get it.
